According to Blue H.E.L.P., an organization dedicated to honoring officers who died by suicide, police suicides have surpassed a thousand in 2020.
As of December 26, 2020, law enforcement suicides are at 1,323 with 827 departments affected. Of the total, 151 of the officers were retired and 243 of them were correctional officers.
However, despite the high number, it is most definitely much higher than 1,323. Blue H.E.L.P. advises that “We do not post the names and faces of all officers without permission of the family”, which simply means, the 1,323 are the known suicides that have been reported to them. There are probably many more that have not been reported publicly for obvious reasons.
The stigma of suicide needs to be broken, so officers suffering from mental health issues can receive assistance without being casted as broken or unfixable.
